The advent of novel WBGM (e.g., diamond, Al_xGa_{1-x}N, cBN) photodetectors should surmount many weaknesses of traditional Si. Using WBGM as the active layer makes the photodetectors radiation-hardened against both UV light and energetic particles (e.g., solar energetic protons, protons and electrons in the radiation belts). Moreover these detectors are also blind to visible light, which alleviates the need for high-rejection filters in the visible range. These are important assets for making observations in the EUV-VUV range (10<\lambda<200 nm).
